MARK CHARLES ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
NATIVE AMERICAN (NAVAJO) CANDIDATE PUSHES FOR TRUTH AND CONCILIATION COMMISSION
Washington, DC --- Mark Charles, a dual citizen of the United States and the Navajo Nation, formally announces the launch of his bid in the race for the office of the President of the United States.
Charles kicked off his campaign as an Independent Presidential candidate on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 with a video announcement on YouTube (https://youtu.be/_livxZNCQeU) that focuses on creating a national dialogue that is equitable and inclusive of all segments of American society.
"Do we want to be a nation where 'We the People' actually means All the People? Because if we do, then we have some foundational level work to do" Mark Charles said in his announcement, referring to the US Constitution and other foundational documents. He points out how these documents have dehumanized large segments of the American society.
Charles promotes the need for a “national dialogue on race, gender, and class on par with the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions of South Africa, Rwanda, and Canada.” He would “call ours a Truth and Conciliation Commission, because reconciliation implies a previous harmony.”
Charles’ campaign for the office of President of the United States as an Independent candidate is a historical moment for Native Americans and comes on the heels of two recent victories for Native Americans in the US Congress.
Charles is a public speaker and writer on the intersects of social justice and American history. He is co-author of a new book due out in November titled ”Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery.”
